What is the point of battle tanks? They seem over powered to me. I think an IFV would do just as fine, considering most modern ones are equiped with a TOW missile.

Let's put it this way, tanks have great power in pushing forward and taking the battle to the enemy... Imagine the enemy has occupied an area and set up machine guns in fortified positions... I think I'd want a tank to crush their positions and scatter them. I don't even need the tank commander to risk his life manning the machine gun, just close all the hatches and roll right over the enemy guns. Once the tank flattens them, we can fight.

All military units have their own special curcumstances where they shine.

TOW's arent anything compared to a 120 mm on an Abrams. The Abrams is almost invincible to infantry, while infantry can take out an IFV. Just think about it.

What is the point of a horse? Military hardware is useful for specific theaters of battle. Tanks rose to prominence during the first World Wars. They provide maximum protection with a huge gun. Recent anti-tank technologies have limited their effectiveness. And using them in the streets of Baghdad would be unconstructive and unsettling to local residents. But next time you see widespread urban warfare, expect to see tanks. And if World War Three ever happens, we may go back to horses.

Well a few things i can think of

they have hevier armor tires would have a hard time supporting 100 tons of weight

The armor is thicker

the 150mm cannor can do amazing damage and carries more rounds than a TOW

with a TOW someone has to poke their heads outside to reload it.. so safer

The intimidation factor.... a big hulking mass of steel barreling thru a building and out the other side in front of you can make you pause .,,,, and become roadkill

It seems perfectly understandable to me to want as much protection as possible if one is being shot at. AFV's have always been and always will be a compromise of firepower, protection and maneuverability, and there are bound to be situations when the best mix of the three will be different. It only makes sense not to put all one's eggs in one basket.

The terrain / environment will determine where battle tanks have the advantage.
