What kind of drugstore, cheap-ish hair products (styling, conditioning. etc.) work really well?

As far as shampoo and conditioner go, you're actually much better off to spend a little money on the better stuff. Cheap shampoo usually contains additives that make it suds profusely, but which dries out your hair. Also, it really isn't that much more expensive in the long run because the good stuff is more concentrated. The cheap stuff is thinner because there's a lot of water added, so you need to use more. Personally, I like Nexxus shampoo and conditioner.

FX Special Effects. You can get them at Walgreens, Wal-Mart, CVS and a bunch of other places. You'll love them!
