Should you ship a suitcase in a box or by itself?

Question

This is not a brand new suitcase. Someone loaned it to his friend when they visited from out of town because they needed an extra suitcase to bring back additiional things. I say the suitcase should be shipped back just like that a suitcase, they say it should have been put in a box.. After all don't suitcases go all over the world.
Would just like some others opinions.

we ship suitcases all the time just as they are
we even have luggage tags for the shipping/airbill
