I think $500 a month for food is a bit on the low side. I am also thinking that water, heat and hydro would cost the average family much more than 150-200 per month. Our gas bill alone is way more than that.

Well, I have lived in BC fr like 35 years and the price obviously keeps going up
Well think about 1500.00 or more for rent, then another 500 for food and about 200.00 for a transit pass (if you dont have a vehicle) another 150-200 month for utilities. Richmond is building a new skytrain section to the YVR (airport) and the taxes are going way up I would think about moving farther out of the GVRD like the Fraser Valley where you do not have the burden of higher cost living....... Good Luck to you and your Family

Apparently the average cost of living for a family of four in the lower mainland is around $3,600 per month ... I find that a bit high, but it probably is right on for anyone with a mortgage and two or more vehicles.

you are looking at major money for rent, damage deposit and the like if you drive the fraser valley would be better money for rent but the commute sucks if you have to go downtown everyday. (then again there is always car pools then you get to use the h.o.v. lane)
