i woke up yesterday morning and my left upper eyelid was swollen, now it's a ot bigger and red. It hurts when i open and close it. Also, there is puss coming out and messing up my vision. how can i make it go away?

it happens a few times a year.

someone told me its because my pillow pushed my eyelid open while i was asleep, but i'm not sure if thats what happened.

Pus is staphloccocus - and it's an infection. Sounds a little more serious than just pink-eye, to me. It could be you'd touched your eyelid with something staph germs were on. A contact infection is when germs spread by direct contact - touching viable germs and carrying them elsewhere.

For instance, if popping a zit staph germs from that can go on the fingertips to the eyelid, infecting it. We all carry germs on our hands and should wash them as often as we can - especially if at risk for cross-contamination. Gel-based alcohol hand cleaner is convenient when we can't wash our hands as often as we'd like.

Because there's so much fluid around the eye it's tough to eliminate all of the germs when pus is present. Tiny tubes of medicated ointment exist for this purpose and require a prescription. It's important to not contaminate the spout of the tube [by touching it to your eyelid while applying the ointment].

I'd be sure to use only freshly laundered pillowcases, too, until this has been cleared up. Be sure to not wash the infected eye with a cloth you'll be using on your other eye [you may infect it, too]. I'd use soft paper towels instead, one for each eye, throwing them away to not spread infection. Germs can live awhile in a moist environment [eg., washcloth, towel]. More infection isn't worth the risk. It's unlikely your pillow pushing your eyelid open is what caused this unless it had live staph germs on it. Even if it did those germs are the culprit. Pressure from your pillow didn't cause this.

If you've used any eye cosmetics during this time you may have transferred staph to them, too [mascara, eyeliner, eyeshadow]. If so, it's possible to reinfect if live germs are hiding in those. Avoid ever using others' cosmetics - never share yours with others - it isn't worth a risk to you and/or them. Same goes for washcloths and towels, if at all possible. Think in terms of good self-defense.

Might want to see a doctor. Old-fashioned pink-eye can last for a week to ten days if untreated. Good hygiene is essential - be extra diligent in keeping hands clean.

Aww! I get these lots of times, and I have allergies. I don't know if that's the case with you, but I'd tell your doctor. But for now, take a warm (not steaming hot!) washcloth, and put it on the infected eye to bring the sore to the surface. Keep that on and repeat every night or day as needed. Visine 'red eye' drops also make your eyes look healthier when you need to go out, so you don't look like a monster. Hope you feel better hun!

Typical response is pink eye...but I went threw that and ended up with infections several times a year.

Are you a woman? My doctor finally linked it to a bacteria infeciton in my makeup and my mascara. Try that one and see if it helps. Sad thing is ..you have to throw out all your make up each time you get an infection. I had to go to ER for Special drops.

You probably have conjunctivitis, and no it has nothing to do with your pillow. Its an eye infection. You need to be on antibiotics, so go see your doctor.

It's either pink-eye (yuck! go to a doctor!) or a stye....

either way, going to the doctor cant hurt...if it's a stye, a warm washcloth will help ease the ooze.

I've never complained about puss in the eye. Or puss anywhere else, for that matter.

you have conjuctivitus. you need to go to an eye doctor and get medicated drops. when you get an infection in your eye its not something to wait to get medical attention. vision is very sensitive.. and your eyes are pretty close to your brain.. you need to go soon.
