You never said what state you are in. The law is different in each state. Generally speaking, possession of mace is probably not allowed for minors in some states.
In my state,( California), a minor of 16 or older, with the written permission of a parent or guardian, MAY purchase tear gas or tear gas weapons, solely for self-defense purposes as long as they are not guilty of a felony or convicted of drug offenses.
There may be some exceptions for possession of these weapons on any school premises or property. You need to check with school districts.

You need to check with your local law enforcement. CA requires a license, or at least they used to.
Make sure what you buy is intended for use on humans. If you use an animal spray on a human you could possibly be charged with mayhem.
Pepper spray will be the most effective. People get used to CN and CS. A 10-15% strength is more than sufficient. Be careful when you buy it that you get a unit that fits what you wand to do with it. Don't buy the big fire extinguisher riot suppression model to put on your keychain. Also think about how you will carry it. Do you go anywhere you aren't allowed to carry it (or would be a bad idea in general?) Remeber hot cars and pepper spray canisters can be a bad mix.

I think it's a good thing to have the age restriction. Although you can tell by some of the questions and answers on here that they can get around that as well. Like some of the others have said, I don't think that I want to be getting advice from a 10 y/o on some things.

Check with local authorities, if you have a cop friend get him to get you the Law Enforcement strength most criminals are used to the spray from jail so most store brands are used by them for hot dog flavoring ..100% capsicum pepper spray from wal mart is nothing compared to 10-25 percent in law enforcement strength.. Try to find a brand called Freeze + P it will put their dk in the dirt ..even if it is illegal to carry ,it is better to pay a small fine than to end up dead

Your friend probably is carrying pepper spray. Mace is more controlled. They're not "cool" if the assailant uses yours on you.
