There are often two types of weapons that replace the Katana.
The first is called a Bokken which resembles the most like a sword in it's shape and actual feel when using it. Ther Bokken is made of solid hard wood.
the next is called a Shinai, this is often used in later training (this is also used in Kendo or Iaido), which is made by binding strips of bamboo together with cloth and cord along with a tsuba to protect the hands.

Samurai practiced kenjutsu with "bokken" (a Japanese abbreviation for "boku ken", or "wooden sword") made of hardwood. Modern practitioners of kendo use bundles of bamboo wrapped with cord called "shinai."
Iaijutsu--the art of attacking with the sword-draw--is often practiced with an iaito; essentially, an unsharpened katana.
All of these items are readily available from any martial arts supplier; I recommend Century in the U. S.

You have several types of these :
1- standard Bokken : for everyday practice....they're generally made of hickory or hard oak.
2- Subirito : these are quite a bit heavier than your standard Bokken. They're used for strength and speed training.
3- Shinai : these are straight bamboo-wrapped training swords. They're used for heavy impact training as they won't break bones...but they still sting like an s.o.b.
