Yes.

I found there were times when I slept and had trouble opening my eyes at times. This was before any meds.

There were other times when I found I could hardly sleep at all. I just slept minimally.

That is about the time I realized what was going on.

Winter is a great time to get depressed due to the lack of sunlight. It happens to many. There are ways to deal with this.

But sometimes that lack of sunlight is just enough to tip the scales when you have had a lot to deal with.

I would recommend that if your bad days outnumber your good days, see your doctor or a good counsellor. The counsellor will help you work on the why. The doctor will possibly recommend meds. I would recommend the counsellor myself.

Sleep problems are very much a symptom of depression and probably the first question your doctor will ask you.

The question that decided my treatment was this.

"You can go on the way you are and explode. Then someone else will put you together. And you might lose your children. Or, you can take the meds, take the edge off, and work on the problem from there. Which do you choose?"

I chose the latter and never looked back. The only think you can do wrong is not listen to your common sense, whatever you decide.

I wish you well.

The most important thing is to find out WHY. taking sleeping pills is not the right solution (maybe it turn out to be the right sollution after all but investigation is needed) i totally suggest you to go to a psychiatrist (i dont mean talk therapy or so although that would be also good. i mean the sort of psychiatrist that knows much about medication) i seriously cant think of anything that could cause your problem (depression? anxiety? bipolar?). or maybe it's doesnt come from psyche and is some other physiological problem... hyperthyroidism or something like this. so maybe a regular checkup and bloodwork helps too. As for sleeping pills, some people use melatonin (never tried it, illegal in germany) and there are 2 kind of sleep pills. some make addictive (and stop working abfter 2 weeks) and some dont (or do this to a lesser extant) you may want to ask your doc for the sort of sedatives which dont cause addiction (and hence stop working). low doeses of some old (low potency) antipsychotics work well and are well tolerated. low dose seroquel is also good (dont freak out by the name antipsychotic, the low doeses used for sleep are quite well tolerated).

First, certain vitamin deficiencies, anemia, mono, and other physical illnesses can make you very tired. Therefore, it might be best to see your doctor and have your blood tested.

Depression and sleep vary with different individuals. Some sleep too much, and some have trouble sleeping at all. Some just stay in bed all the time, but do not actually sleep.

Certain meds for depression make certain individuals sleep. I take an old antidepressant, Elvail, and it works like a sleeping pill for me. Some other antidepressants need to be taken in the morning, as they keep people awake. I know that when I ran out of my medication, I wanted to be able to sleep (intentional), because I felt so bad--but I couldn't sleep (withdrawal).

some people are depressed and not even realize it. I went to my doctor because I was sleeping a lot and just never felt like doing anything. I wasn't sad but after answering some of her questions I realized I was depressed. This was during a time when I had 2 children and another on the way. It's a lot of responsibility to take care of your own children. Instantly my mind went to having to teach them to drive, buying them a car, medical bills, school home work which I may not be smart enough to help them with, college and so on and so on. My oldest was only 6 and I had him married with kids of his own, while he was in first grade. My doctor told me to take one day at a time and enjoy my children at their current age. Yes, plan for the future but don't let the future control you. My depression began when I had adjusted to having 2 children and then finding out a 3rd child would be coming soon. I now have 4 kids and it's not nearly as hard as you might think. All they want is to be loved and I got that in bunches!

Depression is sometimes difficult to deal with. Sometimes short term medication is needed, like Zoloft. Some people need a higher dose of Zoloft or a similar medication just to be able to cope. It's just caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain and it's nothing to be ashamed of or scared of. After I started my new meds I found out that there are A LOT of people who take meds like this. Usually depression causes you to want to sleep the day away. It is unintentional but try not to think of it in that way. It is a defense mechanism that your body reacts to so you can cope with certain issues. The secret is to learn to cope with those issues in a more positive way. Maybe you can confront them alone, or with the help of a friend, or with the help of prescription medication.

Please type in ''depression'' on your browser and you will find many informative sites that can help you to understand whta depression is and how to cope with it.

For me, it seems that when I'm depressed I sleep to quiet everything in my head. I get tired of crying, tired of thinking, and sleep is the easiest way to run away from it all. Granted, things are normally just a bad when I wake up, but for those moments it's a way to get away. When you are depressed, you can loose your interest in activies that you normally enjoy. You loose care for once important things, and your energy drains because of it. It is intentional (to escape) and unintentional (no energy.) I hope everything works out for you ^_^

Wanting to sleep a lot goes along with depression if you are sleeping then you don't have to deal with all the stuff that depresses you

Excessive sleep is certainly a sign of depression. Depression is serious business---you really should see a doctor. There is also the possibility that it isn't depression, and guess what---you should still see a doctor.

when i was depressed i slept to avoid having to deal with the intense thoughts & emotions i felt when i was awake, but i also think being sad is tiring itself, so it could be both intentional and unintentional. if you suspect that you are depressed, please find someone (such as a school counselor) to talk to right away- even if you aren't depressed, they can still help you with your problems.

Before you declear yourself depressed, first have yourself checked by a doctor. Sometimes your symptoms can simply be metabolic, or can be a symptom of chronic fatigue. Depression does cause excessive fatigue and sleepiness, however, please get checked out first
