People who are left-handed can use a fountain pen with as much ease as right-handed people. I have a few left-handed friends who used fountain pens with speed and felicity. It is a question of getting used to it. I am right-handed and still use a fountain pen for writing letters and for signing checks.
Smears are caused by the type of nib, absorbent quality of paper, and to some extent the composition of the ink. If you find smears on the paper when you use fountain pen ink, keep the sheet exposed to air for a longer period and use an ink blotting paper. Most probably it would be that the nib has become worn out and needs a change.
Personally, I prefer the use of fountain pen. It is more elegant and stylish - at least to me!
Ball point pens let you write faster than when you use fountain pens as the flow of ink thru the ball is more even and fast.
Ball point pens are also easy to use, allow for refills to be inserted and generally don't smear the paper or your shirt pocket or fingers, unless there is a crack in the tube making the ink spill. I think handwriting would improve if you use fountain pen. There is, however, a problem of refilling the ink at frequent intervals.
The day wont be far for fountain pens to become extinct! They have already become rare, and now we don't get simple fountain pens. They still make expensive ones which are used by the elite or as an exclusive objet d'art!
