He was able to forstall his excecution a couple times by claiming the legal protection of being a Roman citizen -- that's basically what the second half of the Book of Acts is about.
However, claiming that Christ as the Living God was *not* grounds for excecution. The Roman pantheon recognized several living gods. Defying the Emperor, on the other hand, was grounds for execution and that was eventually what happened to him.
