We rescued a 2-3 yr old female. She is pretty thin and may have been abused. She is very timid and quiet. We will get her to the vet ASAP, but we know nothing about this breed. Any advise?

Possibly an abandoned/lost hunting dog.
We have two dogs that we found and rescued in this way. Generally it just takes time, patience, love, and good food to bring them back to the happy healthy pet they should be.
Our dogs (found separately at different times) were terrified skeletons--- one had a chain collar embedded about an inch in her neck. It actually took several years before they became totally normal confident dogs--- Both were especially scared of men, loud voices, etc.
Just treat her with gentleness and love-- beagles are generally very sweet dogs. You are doing a good thing!

well coming from a rough background she will be of course timid and may take her a while to come around. once she does and you get her to her best. She will be a good dog with proper training beagles are stubbnorn but good dogs..the tend to follow their nose so its not good to have them off leash.... make sure you back yard is secure for outside time,
good luck we have a 2 year old beagle that we have had since she was 16 weeks. if you need any help feel free to email me

Keep the dog confined to a crate or a small area so she isn't overwhelmed with her new environment!
Beagles are scent hounds so they should never go unleashed unless you have a fenced yard. Once she is feeling better she may choose to serenade you as only beagles can.

Good luck with her. She is a lucky girl to have found a caring home at last!

You're on the right track -- the vet is first priority. I found a dumped beagle several years ago. He was abused and starved nearly to death. We just fed him small amounts at first b/c his system wasn't used to getting food. PetGold is also a great product. It's in a tooth-paste-like tube, and animals love it. It's really high in calories. Other than medical care and food/water, use a soothing voice and don't force yourself on her. She'll eventually come around. God bless you!

Joining a moderated Yahoo group like Start Puppy Training will help you a lot. Abused dogs, shy dogs, and rescue dogs generally respond amazingly to patient, positive training. Good luck!!!
