My cat had kittens and they are now 7 weeks old. There were 3 females and 1 male. For the last week the mother has been fighting very badly with her son. They take it in turns who starts it but it is mostly the mother. But its odd, because she still feeds him and plays with him but then all of a sudden she turns on him. She does not attack any of the females. We were wanting to keep the male but if they keep fighting we are not sure. Whats the best thing we can do to stop them from fighting. Its actually like she is trying to kill him. Thanks for your answers

It is what she does. He must be ready to be weened at that age and she will soon do it with her girls. It will settle down after she stops feeding him. There should be no reason why you can't keep the little bugger. Check this out it may help.

Totally normal, and there are several reasons for this behavior. Some were already stated; she might be trying to wean him, she could just be playing, etc. Remember that cats playing can often look rough to us humans. My male and the female I once had used to beat the living crap out of each other, and it really looked as if they hated each other (ears back, tails swishing violently, kicking each other in the face, etc.), but they never HURT each other. When one cat hurts another, you'll know it....and if it's really violent behavior, one WILL get hurt.

The other reason could be discipline. Judging by the behavior BEFORE the attacks, I'd be inclined to think that is the reason the mother is turning on the boy. Mother cats will often play with their kittens....but if a kitten gets too rough, Mom will put it in check to let it know that it was too rough, and it needs to back down a bit. It's about teaching the babies limits. Dogs do the same thing to their puppies. It's on par with a human mother spanking their child or putting him in a timeout for hitting someone. Don't separate them and don't interfere. She's just being a mother....let her do her job and everything will turn out fine.

I had a female that did the same thing. She would go for the throat and it looked like she was really putting force on the kitten. It was also a sudden thing that always ended good, but it was weird to look at. Don't worry it turns out ok. To answer your question, maybe she is teaching him something like how to fight or that Shes the boss.

Cats Are Very Territorial. That mans a cat feels a stranger has invaded his/her territory. In a case like that, a cat would desire to be aggressive in the direction of one cat -- frequently the main elementary-going -- yet friendly to a different. The time while problems crop up is while a clean kitty arrives, a youthful kitten turns right into a guy or woman cat, or the homestead cat looks out the window to work out a wierd cat interior the backyard -- the homestead cat would chase, ambush, hiss, and/or meow angrily. And it’s no longer in basic terms the boys. lady cats would be purely as infuriated via strangers.

Its for dominance, She is the Alpha female and is letting the male know. She is also probably trying to wean him. I'm sure that they will work it out evenutally.

Clear case of child abuse. Call DCFS and report her for being an unfit mother. Why should cats get to beat their kids?
