I came home from work today, and my dog has chewed off his harness, and eaten all of the nylon straps, leaving only a pile of rings and buckles! Is this serious enough that I need to call a vet, or will it likely just pass through? Is there anything I can do right now for him?

Yes, this is very serious. If it does not pass on it's own, he will have to go in for surgery. Call the vet, he may have you watch him and collect the passed pieces of the harness to make sure the whole thing is there. He will also have you watch for symptons such as vomiting and diarrhea which may be an indication that the harness has caused a blockage, or has strangled the intestines which means.....surgery time!

Nylon is indestructible which means it will not be digested, so unless the dog chewed it very well before swallowing it will not pass through.

Ask yourself do you want to take the risk with the life of a member of the family when It only takes the cost of phone call to the Vet for expert advice on whether the dog needs emergency treatment.

the nylon wont break down in his stomach. If it is in small pieces it should pass ok.

I would call a vet , and ask them what to watch for . If there is a blockage of the bowel it is very serious.

Are you sure it ate the straps and not just chewed them up and scattered them ?

I think it is VERY serious & you need to take him to a vet or emergency pet clinic! I know a dog of my friend's friend that ate a sweater & it needed surgery (an expensive one, too). A week later ,it ate a blanket & needed another surgery.. So, yeah, take it to the vet..now!

I would go to the vet. You can't tell if your dog chewed the strap in to bite sized pieces or swallowed it whole. If he swallowed it whole it could get stuck in his intestines or he might just vomit it back up. I wouldn't like to take the chance though. good luck

first make sure he did eat the harness and he didn't hide it. my dog does this all the time. if he can't get comfortable you need to call a vet if it is not usuall. if it is usuall you need to chill out and comfort him. i wouldn't recomend you to feed him right away that might give him a stomach ache.
