If you're an atheist, would you ban religion if you could? If you're religious, would you make your religion the "national religion", or ban some other religion?

As for me, I'd do pretty much anything to defend religious freedom - one of the few things I'm sure I believe in!

i am an athiest and would never force my "religion" on anyone. i used to be catholic(wanted to be a nun) and even then i knew there had to be a seperation of church and state. i have been very lucky to have people not shun me after my "realization"

I am an agnostic....which means I'm "in between theism and atheism". If I had the power, I would abolish organized religion. I think religion should be practiced individually. Religious literature and bibles would still be legal to purchase from bookstores and stuff, but churches would be gone. Religion should be practiced within the confinds of your home. Any people caught "pushing" their religion onto unwilling people, will be arrested.
That's what I would do.

I'm an atheist as well as a Buddhist... I have no intentions of supporting any bans on religion, since Buddhism isn't for everybody, nor is my ideas about ethics, however when religion starts to cause "harm" or "suffering", it's correct action to try to right the wrongs, with compassion.

Atheists have tried to ban and stop Christianity since it first began. They can't do it because God is on our side. Does it not alarm you that people want to take your rights away from you. No, I would not want a "national religion", freedom of choice is our right at least for the moment.

When you ban something like that, it grows in popularity. That's a practical consideration. I would never attempt to ban anyone's religious beliefs. I would, however, defend myself against attempts to force me (or others) to conform to any one of those belief systems. In essence, I would die to defend your right to your religious beliefs. I wonder how many fundamentalist Christians would say the same about my right to not believe what they do?

Fascinating, isn't it, that at least 2 people thumbed down answers from believers and non-believers supporting everyone's right to believe what they believe. Apparently, that right should only apply to the thumber's rights, but no one else's. And you think only Muslims are extremists?

Absolutely! Power is intoxicating and I'm not immune to it's effect. Given the opportunity I'd bend the entire planets population to my will. I'd do it in a heartbeat without a backwards glance or moments remorse. It is the only way to really get things done!

No I wouldn't force my faith on anyone else. God didn't force me to believe in Him, He gave me the choice. I would certainly like the opportunity to present Christ to everyone and I fully believe that if all were Bible believing Christians we would have a much better world. But I leave that in God's hands.

no, i would not...although i've been accused of it, having committed the unforgivable sin of quoting Christ in this 'religion and spirituality' forum...i'm a firm believer in religious freedom...and that includes the right to reject religion altogether

If I were king of the world, I would not ban religions. People should have the right to believe as they choose.

However, I will make sure that there is a strict separation between church and state such that:

1) Get all references to god off government documents, including our currency
2) Get all references to god out of the pledge to allegiance
3) Get all references to god out of our courtrooms
4) Get all references to god out of our public schools
5) Eliminate all prohibitions that discriminate against different religions and atheism
6) Remove tax exempt status from churches that practice politics
