wouldn't hurt to back up your main files that you don't want to lose
such as music files, pics, some programs that you have on your computer

and once you get vista installed - make sure you make a backup copy for future use in case you need to re-install for some reason or another

picture and word files will not be deleted (in most cases) if u do the upgrade. follow through with everything as "recogmended" (don't worry, it'll show you) However, most music and powerpoint files will be deleted. I have recently done this to several computers upgrading from 98 to XP. I'm not certain what will happen if u do the clean installation.

Here are some GREAT things you should run: 1. Goto: Start>My computer>(Right click) Local disk C:>Properties>Disk Clean up. NOTE: MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS CHECKED BESIDES ANYTHING THAT BEGINS WITH COMPRESS AND STARTUP. 2. Goto: Start>My computer>(Right click) Local disk C:>Properties>Tools tab>Defragment now. Then click on Defragment. (near the lower middle) 3. Repeat 2 but click on Check now Under error checking, and click the second checkbox. And if the first one is checked uncheck that. NOTE: All of these steps may take longer then a hour all together. If these dont help make ur pc rune faster. You might want to look into uninstalling windows and everything. Talk to a professional about that though. hope i helped.

An 'upgrade' will keep all of your settings and programs. However a 'clean install' will wipe out everything, your programs and all of your settings. Unless you have all of the software installation disks for your programs and have backed all of your data, you want to do an Upgrade.

If you do a "clean install," you will lose everything you currently have loaded. If you don't want to, do the upgrade.

What you need to save are all of your compressed downloaded files (so you do not have to download again) and ALL of your data files - reinstall all of your programs from the original disks this is safest.
