Bradley P sums it up :-
Lack of imagination, initiative and spirit of adventure, what a boring life he must lead, I assume he's an american!! For your information, life in the Tropics,(look it up) is always warm, I live on a private island in the Philippines, am English, and wake up every dawn to put on a pair of shorts, leave my air-con rooms, go out into 32 degree centigrade air and jump into a crystal clear unpolluted sea, teeming with coral and life, with a temperature of 32 degrees C.
I've also lived in 7 countries, all third world, and travelled through 70 more, all without a lot of money, all it takes is a little 'get up and go' attitude, which is sorely missing amongst americans, 95% of whom will never even know what a passport looks like!
Ginger sounds cool though and would make a good traveller if she can escape one day....

Ginger sums it up good for Americans, but one has to take one's destiny into one's own hands. I'm American, but hate the oppressive system there (no vacation, big mortgage, car payments, etc.) so I picked up and went to work for a German company where I enjoy 17 holidays, and 30 days paid vacation at 30% more pay than an average American company. OK, I had to learn German, but what's the big deal? Just learn it. Tequila guy is right, you need some get up and go. If you want to do something you can.
I have lived all over Europe, West Africa, and I'm now in Asia. I left the USA 15 years ago today, and never even thought once about going back because it is sooooo boring back in Buffalo where I'm from.
Live life, do what you want. The USA is very oppressed - not from the legal system, but from the social pressures.
Answer: Its not money, time or anything else. Its the mentality!

For people in the US it's not enough vacation time and the expense/distance. If you are in Europe travel is much easier as the countries are so close together, and most European countries have 4 to 5 times the amount of vacation time allowed that the average worker in the US has.
I know that a lot of people complain that the Americans don't partake of the rest of the world as they should, but we only have 10 days of vacation a year. I love to travel, but it's very hard to manage and be able to see ones family at the holidays as well.

Visas I should say rank high in the list of hassles.
Money..not everyone can afford to set a budget aside for travelling
Time..and leave off work
Kids..some are not portable
Political Instability in certain areas of the world
Fear of flying (see above reason)
Personality profile of certain people who work in demanding competitive jobs that need them to be available all the time
Finally lack of interest in travelling either due to other hobbies or just because they couldnt be bothered

well the most popular answer I would suspect would be time and money.
If I were a lottery winner with millions and not having to work i would now be travelling the world!
However i have a job that only allows me 4 weeks paid holiday a year and that combined with money is what restricts my travel options.

--Lack of money,
--Lack of time,
--Lack of desire to see much of the world...even if I could travel, what would I see? Really, unless I stayed in the poshest parts of the civilized world, I wouldn't see much more than unrelenting hatred (some of it justified mind you) of "that ugly *stupid* American". And I'm not a rich person, I don't *do* posh or snobby so well....
So yeah, what's the point? There are no warm climates these days...no place is safe. None.

for me money is definitely a factor.
also the fact that i'm not living in my country of origin, i tend to go back home for holidays rather than going other places.
