There are a couple of ways to get the file from the camera onto your computer. One way is to connect your camera to your computer via the USB port. Your camera should have come with a USB cable. Simply connect your camera to your computer and turn on your camera. You should see your camera in the "My Computer" window on Windows (I haven't tried this on a Mac, but I would think it would show up as a disk volume.)

The other method is to use a card reader. A card reader allows your computer to read the memory card that is in your camera. Again, the card reader would probably show up as a disk drive on Windows or a disk volume on the Mac. Once you've inserted your memory card into the reader, its just a matter of copying the files over to your hard drive. And once its in the hard drive, you can use the software provided by Nikon to read the raw files. (I believe Adobe Photoshop can also open NEF files, but am not sure.)
