I would think you have some neck problems beginning to show. Probably the discs are degenerating and this puts pressure on the vertabrae and surrounding tissue. The nerves get irriatated or pinched sometimes, when the nerve is affected, you'll know, the pain is outrageous. I suggest seeing your doc for an exam and possibly a referral to a orthopaedic doctor, they specialize in this stuff. Do you notice your neck being stiffer?Do either of your shoulders hurt, or is pain going down into your arm?Is the feeling you have numbness, or like when your foot "fallls asleep"? There is a difference in the two. To help prevent inflammation, take Ibuprofen as directed,it works great for that use, also will help with minor pain. I also, would invest in a foam cervical collar, they cost about twenty bucks, you could wear it in the evening after work,or you could sleep with it on as well,it will help support your head, giving your neck a break. Good luck, I hope it's not real bad, I've had two neck surgeries myself and live in chronic severe pain,so I know how you can worry.

Need a little more info, but from the little you've given, it sounds more like carpal tunnel syndrome than anything else. If you get pins and needles / tingling, especially on the thumb half of your hand as well, then thats more likely. Do you find yourself waking up and shaking the hand to try and make it go away?
Carpal tunnel syndrome has many causes, including manual labour, bad luck, pregnancy & arthritis. Its hard to say how to treat it as it depends on a cause, but sometimes a change in occupation, a pill or eventually an operation might be necessary.

I also have this problem. For me, I discovered by going to a chiropractor, and then a neurologist, that the disks in my neck are swollen and clamping down on the nerves which causes carpal tunnel syndrome in my hands and arms. You may want to have this checked out. In the meantime, you may want to switch your pillow to one that hase more significant neck support.
