I see this in movies. I don't know if it is true. I would dare to say that an officer of the law would not actually taste the drug to verify it is actually an illicit drug, i.e. cocaine. I believe there would have to be lab tests. Otherwise the officer would pop positive on a drug test.

Police Officers who practice this kind of a test are totally untrained......the TV/Movies are the culprit here. The professional police officer will never put his health at risk in this manner.

Come on, do you really believe this happens in real life? In addition to the fact that it a drug, drugs are cut with everything from rat poison to talcum powder. No person in their right mind would taste test it. There are field test kits available. In addition, the arrest does not have to be done on the spot. The suspected drug can be sent to the crime lab for identification, and charges levied at a later time.

Movies are movies for a reason, I am a officer and in particular a K-9 handler. My dogs finds drugs and either myself or another officer will test the drugs with a field portable drug test to determine if the narcotics in question are positive for actual drugs or not.

In real life, it is not done that way. There are field drug testing kits available to law enforcement for this specific purpose. What you see in the movies and old tv shows is not reality.

Movies only. These days even the drug dealers bring test kits with them. I know of no one who still uses the "taste test". You never know the purity of the product or the possible poisons it was cut with.

I would only think it is in the movies. They do have instant kits in the car to test so they don't have to do the god awful thing of tasting it as we often see in the movies.

I think you are right. They wouldn't taste a drug in real life. Cocaine would just numb your tongue but what if it is pcp or something like that.
