My cats do this crazy behavior too. I looked it up and there seem to be many theory. Most to do with removal from mom too young.

My 11 yr old cat does this all the time!! A recent poster thought it may be due to being taken from mom to young. Well, my girl nursed from mommy until she was four and a half months old! I have her brother also who never does anything weird. But her! Oh, my. We have to be really careful at Christmas time. She likes licking tinsel. She also loves licking the developer off of photographs. And the worst is tape! She loves to lick tape, lol. There is not a photo out in our house that is not in a frame and bringing home groceries is a race to get the bags up before she comes down and you have to wrestle her for them. My kids have a habit of leaving the tape out so when you go to use it, it is all chewed off.
I don't know why she does it, lol. We just adapted. We do make positively sure she doesn't accidentally eat any of these things though. My sis's cat ate tinsel also and she died because it got lodged in her intestines. So, no more tinsel here.

If I had to venture a guess I would agree that it is a texture thing. By watching my cat for 11 yrs I notice that she is never trying to eat what she is licking. If it gets too far in her mouth she spits it out and starts licking again. Although taste would explain the developer and tape, lol.
Sorry I can't help explain it, but I do know it is perfectly normal.
Like most things with cats... make sure she's safe and sit back and laugh. They are funny lil fellas, lol.

My cat did that too! She was very selective though and only went for the thick shopping bags and actually would leave little teeth marks all the way around the bag, she wouldn't eat it though.... the only bags she would go for were from our LCBO store (Liquor store) so maybe she liked the smell from there... strange, but funny that there are others out there with cats who have the same behaviour. I always thought mine was the only one! There must be something in the making of the bags that attracts them. Also btw my cat had been doing this since she was a kitten and lived to be 16 without any illnesses so I don't think there are any harmful effects as long as they don't eat it....

So your cat does it too. Welcome to the club. My tabby LOVES plastic bags. I don't know exactly why but assume that she likes either the taste or the feeling of it on her tongue. The bags may also smell really good to them. Just because you can't smell it does not mean they can't. It is nothing to worry about as long as your kitty does not start eating the bags and does not get his head caught in the handle. Just caulk it up to the weirdness of felines.

My cat likes to lick weird things, too. Like balloons, photographs, the covers of paperback books, pens, some of my son's action figures and his whoopee cushion. There must be some sort of chemical in these things which is attractive for cats.

not purely does he lick them, yet he likes to chew on them too. The experience isn't that grand even as it really is 3:00 interior the morning . the superb element to do is to ensure that you do hid the plastic. allow you to comprehend cat to easily say no! Plus there's a chance that the plastic may nicely be ingested and ought to damage the cat finally.

It is completely normal. My cat plays in or with bags all the time. She gets in our pantry where all the bags are kept and goes though them, and makes a huge mess out of it.

My cat does it too. Probably because the bag has the smell of the store it came from, and the smell is probably AWESOME to the cat.

Well, many cats do do strange things. Even though your cat may enjoy it, don't let him. If he is an older cat, his toung might be worn or dirty. you should look into it more persanaly before jumping to conclusions. A cat is like a child.
