Pls help...im getting d 40 for $589 and 350d for $999 in india ? bit confused with the Indian price

Canon is NOT always a better name than Nikon. They hold the same respect at each level of comparison. I'm a Nikon guy, but I think I'd lean towards the Canon in this comparison. The only fault I see with the Canon is the lack of a true spotmeter. If you can live with that, buy the Canon. The thing is, as you progress and add lenses, you will be buying good lenses with either camera. When you upgrade your body in 4, 5, or 6 years, you will buy the same brand of body that you have lenses for. By THAT time, you will either be buying a very upscale Canon with a spot meter or Canon will have finally seen the light and their EOS 500D will have a spot meter. Otherwise, I think the Canon 350D is the better choice over the somewhat limited Nikon D40.

If you were choosing between the Canon EOS 400D and Nikon D80, I'd be singing a different tune, though.
