This definitely sounds like mange, which is very infectious; to other animals, and also to humans. This is case where you need to take your poor dog to the vet as soon as possible.
Once any living creatures skin is broken and bleeding, they become susceptible to all kinds of infections and can die. Please get your dog some professional help as soon as possible, he is dependent on you to take care of him. Best of luck, I hope that he feels better soon.

sounds like sarcoptic mange. contagious. even to you. get it to the vet. it won't go away by itself. it will eventually kill your dog if you don't. if you don't get it treated you can get in trouble for not seeking medical help for your animal.
mange is a mite. it burrows in the skin and causes SEVERE itching , hair loss, and ugly lesions. your dog's condition is no reflection on you. it doesn't mean you live in filthy conditions, or let your dog run the streets. rabbits, squirrels, etc. can carry it. so if your dog has gotten hold of a critter that's one way he could have gotten this

Sorry but you should really take him to the vet it sounds like mange and only a medicated shampoo will work. But ive been told that covering the area with vasoline sufforcates the bugs under the skin and forces them out. Ive never tried it but I don't think it will cause any harm

Well he needs to see a vet to see what the underline cause is of this.
If he has flea's, Goto walmart and get a 3mo supply of harts flea and tick drops its like 5.00. It works enough to get the fleas off for a cheap fix but i recomend frontline.
He may have mange, In this case you can order online this product called nu stock. It works great on dogs with mange. its 11.00 a jar.
He it is hot spots you can buy hot spot treatment at walmart.
Just make sure you keep it clean so it doesnt get infected untell you can get to a vet to help.

Your going to have to go the vet. I"m sorry but that sounds like mange. Mange is a major thing to. It had to have medical attention or a dog can die from it. It's not too expenisve and he can surrvive from it. Please get it checked I may not be right but ammature diagnoses can be deadly.
