Hey guys,
I was wondering if, for instance, let's say someone listened to tapes in a foreign language they had no exposure to before everyday for hours with no help (asking someone what something means or looking it up online, etc.) just listen to them, could they in time eventually come to understand that language, what do you think? This is something I was just curious about. Thanks

I'm just curious if this is possible , I'm not thinking about doing it myself, even if it were possible, I don't think I could do it. I just think it would be cool if a person could do that, and was wondering if it was at all possible.

No. You might memorize some phrases, but you would never be able to adequately connection words into making a sentence and properly learn or enter fluency with that language.

I'm just going to presume that you mean tapes in a foreign language which are designed to teach a person a new language..
(Ie - sentences in English, then in that language)

I think it's possible.. It would take a lot more time than say, living a country which speaks the language...

Sure it's possible though.

However, if it was simply listening to tapes in a foreign language with no Engish meanings given after say, each sentence or word... Could be a bit of a challenge!!!

All the best!!

From tapes? With no explanations? I sincerely doubt it. I have learned Spanish without books or teachers, but I constantly ask questions and have some knowledge gaps. I moved to Mexico 4 years ago with a 0 level in Spanish. I am now at a 70 % speaking level (problems with verb conjugations), and a 95 % level of understanding what is being said. But like I said....lots of questions and people explaining things. Look, even a baby has input regarding context, and that is what you are asking....Can I learn a language without context as to what the converations mean? How could they? You might catch a word or two which are cognates (two words that sound alike) like information and informacion, but not much else.

Maybe some phrases, but I don't think just tapes would do much for learning sentence structure etc. I think tapes would be a good starting point or supplement but not a sole source.

I don't think you can learn it completely from tapes, but my mom is from lebanon and I didn't know any arabic when I started listening to her music all the time. Now, I understand a lot of words even though no one ever told me what they meant. Also, my dad learned spanish from living in Mexico, with no translator, in a year or so.

To speak fluently you need to practise with living human beings and in spontaneous circumstances. How can you do that only using the internet? Obviously people do not stick to programmed dialogues - they speak with accents, dialogues and use slang. The only way to become fluent is to live in the country where the language is spoken as a mother tongue where you will be forced to use it every day.

I've heard it works. Just make sure you're not listening to people talk about only one subject. Otherwise you'll only be able to talk about that subject.

I think that it is possible because that is how humans learn their native language just listening to their parents ,t.v ....
