It used to be the bride's family who paid the bill - today, the bill is the responsibility of the couple who is getting married UNLESS the familes CHOOSE to participate. It is considered quite rude to expect or demanded that family members pay for the wedding especially if you are not living at home and are already an independent adult.

Usually the girls family foots most of the bill, unless the parents get together and decide differently. If the parents do not want to put any money in, then the bride and groom must pay, pay, pay.

Generally, the brides parents pay for the wedding. The grooms parents pay for the rehearsal dinner. If her parents don't have the money for it, it's got to come from somewhere.

Traditionally the bride's family pays for the wedding and the reception,...... as a remnant of when people would pay the groom to take the bride off their hands.
If they want you to pay for it, then reconsider whether you want to marry into their dysfunctional family.

Not any more - those days are LONG gone... These days, with couples working, they pay for their own wedding, and budget accordingly to how much they can afford themselves.
