I've always wondered if hybrids of these two dogs could be created. You figure, you'd either get a really nasty large dog, perfect for guarding property and terrorizing neighbors. Or you'd get a less obnoxious little dog.
Is theoretically possible to do?

Sweet Purple - Yeah, I actually discussed the difficulty in procreating with a co-worker. I was thinking it could be done through artificial insemination, or something like that.
-
I'd also think the Great Dane would have to be the female. If a small Chihuahua were carrying the baby, I would think she wouldn't be able to sustain it, and you could have a badly malnourished puppy. (It would be small, I would think.)

Cindy - My reasoning is this: If you had a dog with the temperment of a Chihuahua that was larger than a normal Chihuahua, it would be perfect for security (albeit, probably not a good 'pet' dog.)
-
Conversely, if you had a dog the size of a Chihuahua without the temperment of a Chihuahua, it would be perfect as a pet. (The one drawback of Chihuahuas is they can be a wee bit grouchy in some cases.)

Thanks for all the feedback! (No, I'm not actually going to try something like this - I just was curious if it could be done.)

It is possible, absolutely. It'd be a crap-shoot as to it's personality. I've seen some chihuahuas that are the sweetest things (I've never seen a mean Great Dane). It'd be an interesting animal.
I saw on Animal Planet that a Chihuahua got pregnant by a labrador so . . . size doesn't matter. The mother had to get the dog surgically removed because it was going to kill the mother.
Good luck.

Unfortunately it is possible. The female MUST be the Dane though, for obvious size reasons. The funny part is that you wouldn't necessarily have to resort to artificial insemination, but you would need an "assistant" to hold the dogs in place. However, most breeders "assist" in their breedings anyway. Is this idea smart? No. Possible? Yes. At the hospital I work at we have a patient that is a "success" (if you can call it that) of the breedings of a Pug and a German Shepherd. It's an atrocity.

In theory, yes. They are both the same species, and can therefore produce viable offspring. However it wouldn't be a wise health choice, especially if the mother were the chihuahua. The pups would be way to large, the complications to great, and it could kill her. There would be no way she'd deliver the pups naturally.
Another point against it, is why do we need to intentionally breed mutts. Shelters are full of them, (and purebreds too) and hundreds die everyday.
I realize your question is just a theoretical one, but since it is possible, its also good to point out the bad things about doing such a thing.

As possible as a shihzu and an english setter, and I had the proof of -that- heritage in my house for almost 10 years.

theoretically, yes it is possible. But the father would have to be the chihuahua since the size of the father more determines the size of the pups. However, i would hope no one would ever even attempt this. There are enough mixed breeds and pure breds dying in shelter every day because there are too many dogs and not enough homes. People really should not breed designer breeds.

Of course it's possible. The real question is, why on earth would you even consider doing such a thing?
On a lighter note - someone would need to stand on a stool or something...

Yes it can be done, however the problem would be the genes from each side that the offspring inherited would not match well. For instance the offspring could inherit the size and shape of its upper jaw bone from one side and a totally different size and shape lower jaw bone from the other. Ball and socket joints could be inherited form each side making their ability to fit together and work well impossible. It is not a cross that would be wise to make.
