I always left dry kitten food for my kittens all day. They eat when they need to. Of course you need to check and see that they are indeed eating. The kitten food will help them gain the right amount of weight. As for how much, an average size bowl filled up,that is comfortable for them to reach into.

You should feed your kitten a can of good quality kitten food, such as Max kitten a day and leave dry food out in a small bowl between morning and evening meals of meat.

it depends on the quality of food. if its something they sell at wal mart youll have to feed it alot the make up for the nutrition loss, and the cat wont stop eating, why? because purina, fancy feast, friskies, all the stuff they call non-premium contains ingredients that make the cat not fill full. you'll feed him alot of food that contains little or no nutrition. id recomend at the very least feeding iams. but that contains alot of by-products, like chicken feathers, beaks, claws, etc. i recomend eagle pack or wellness. sorry right now in college were learning about what goes into making cat and dog food and its sick! but as for the amount, read the bag, it will say how much, and keep that amount in a bowl each day.
