I've always wondered this why do we pray with our heads down, shouldn't we be looking up to God when we pray?

Bowing our heads when we pray is a way of being humble to God.There is no right or wrong way to pray to god. I pray when I'm driving and I wouldn't dare bow my head during this time.God likes having a personal relationship with us and Prayer should be personal but stature means nothing to god.

Good question, and some would say we can look up to God. The tradition comes from the idea that when showing respect to someone that was higher then you socially, intellectually that a person bowed there head as a sign of respect. Bowing your head is also a sign of humility. So when we pray, we want to come before God humbly. But really I think it is a personal thing. God just wants you to talk to him.

I pray with my head down because it shows my reverence before God, just as in some countries you are not to look the King in the face for reverence.

But I also believe that when you are looking downward, you are showing your humilty and humbling yourself before your God. I also find that during prayer I do a lot of introspective thinking about myself, so I guess you could say that looking down also points our thoughts towards our souls and what we need to change about ourselves.

At least that's what I find myself doing when I'm in prayer.

hmm there are many different ways for prayer posture. personally i pray prostrate on my face which is a down position simply because what you must go down before you can come up i think it would surely hurt alot if i were high up and came down. for example people that are normally proud and full of pride think up or highly of them selves and eventually their high mindedness get torn and oulled down i say work ur way from the bottom to the top so that when you get the top you will know how to stay up. this is the analogy with our prayers my friend.

I think in most religions we pray kneeling and with our heads bowed to show respect for God and our own humility in his presence, just like how people used to bow to royalty.

This is a question I ask myself alot, but I do know the answer to it.

It's because we're talking to God... and we're bowing down to him basically, like we bow to the queen or something.

Another answer could be, if you're looking down, it's less distracting and you're more likely to focus on your conversation with God.

hope that helped x

We bow our heads and fold our hands so as not to be distracted by anything - it's so we can focus our thoughts on God. Closed eyes usually go with bowed heads.

its because we are showing respect to god, like bowing or kneeling. Some cultures kneel and look down to get small to express how small we are compared to god. Some cultures look at it as god is too great to look at, like blinding power so we look down. Others look down or bow to show faith and trust in god, because in order to look down in someone's presence you must trust them not to do anything while you aren't looking.

it's done in reverence and in submission to God, not to be actually looking God in the face.

In Islam, we prostrate ourselves before Allah to show Him absolute worship and praise.
