No matter what breed anyone on here suggests, keep in mind that you NEED to research breeds. YA is NOT the place to do that. Everyone is going to tell you to get whatever breed they have because their dog is "the best". Research breeds and then once you choose one you could ask for peoples' experiences with that particualr breed, but no one here has any idea what your lifestyle is like therefor no one on here can give you a legitimate answer.
EXAMPLE...the first answer suggests a Jack Russell. Got to www.terrier.com and read about them for yourself. I have a JRT mix myself. They are little terrors that require a firm hand, no other smaller pets in the house, professional obedience (as do most) and they are HIGH energy dogs that will get destructive if not given an out for their energy. And that's just the tip of the iceberg with this breed! The next answer is a Cocker Spaniel. If you research the statistics you will find more dog bite reports on Cocker Spaniels then any other breed, including the Pit Bull.

I bought a short haired fox terrier about a year ago, and it is the best dog ever! It is soo good with my 6 and 4 years olds. It is also protective of them. If you have an angry look on your face, and you come around my dog, the dog will growl at you. It doesnt growl at children though. Rat terriers and Boxers are also great with the kids.

I know that Cocker Spaniels are good dogs for small children. Smaller breeds though can get snappy and territorial when around young children, but if raised with babies or kids, im sure any dog could adapt to their age.

Schipperki is about a 1 foot to 2 feet long and it is good around children go to a pen store and ask for a schipperki (Shi-pur-kee).

I find that silkies are really good around little kids and they don't grow to big. I've owned quite a few dogs and these are one of my favourites.

A minature Snauzer. They are very sweet mannered and they are so cute!! They love kids too, especailly if they are a pup and grow up around the kids.
