I wouldn't. That certification shows that he is keeping up with the latest and greatest stuff and keeping up with in-service training.

Actually, there is nothing wrong with going to a non-board-certified orthodontist for treatment. Depending on where you live, it may be next to impossible to find one who IS board certified. A majority of orthodontists actually choose NOT to become board certified because of the length of time, multiple steps, and ridiculous effort it takes to get certified. It can take up to ten years after a person successfully completes a masters of science program in orthodontics (which is at least 2 years after dental school, which is 4 years after college, which is 4 years after high school....just a reality check for many of you who answered above). Besides that, there are a couple of different "boards" who claim authority over the specialty making it possible that a person with a doctorate in dentistry and a masters in orthodontics could spend 20 years trying to get certified by all of the "boards." Go see a doctor who has a masters degree in orthodontics, and you will be just fine. I bet you have EXTREME difficulty finding a specialist who is certified.

Just to dispel any possible misconceptions, I am not an orthodontist, nor do I provide orthodontic treatment of any kind.

He might do a great job but the pricing should be relatively close to that of a Board Certified orthodontist so why take the risk. I say to to one that has that certification. It's just another thing that helps you make a smart decision in choosing someone to help improve your appearance.
