Zero tolerance results in an officers ablity to issue a 24 hour prohibition from driving. An accumulation of 24 hour restrictions results in loss of driving priviledges. Although you are sure that you have not exceded the legal limit, to prove this you must leave your vehicle at the side of the road and be detained to a police detatchment for a more positive sample to prove your innocence. once proven you are left to your own devices to return to your Vehicle, if your Vehicle has not been towed. Make up your mind either you have a legall limit or you don't. Should the Motor Vehicle Branch be allowed to set their own laws as to the legal limit to opertate a motor vehicle in Canada? Should Police Officers be able to change the law at will as to enact punishment beyond the written law? Do you think that this is just another money grab that should be deemed unconstitutional?

Zero tolerance doesn't change the legal limit, so the law hasn't been changed. If you don't test over 0.08, you are released, not charged, right?

The 'legal limit' for any country is only a guideline for prosecution based on the percentile sample of drivers.

Up to the 5percentile they will be very drunk, even under the 0.8 limit, above the 95 percentile they will be totally in control even well over the 0.8 limit but the 90% in between those two extremes is what counts.

It has been scientifically proven time and time again that any amount of alcohol in your system is sufficient to impair your judgement and can lead to loss of control of the vehicle.

Remember, if someone drinks and remains say around the 0.6 level but doesn't eat anything, they will be more susceptible.

Best advice is not to drink, or, if you're out with buddies, nominate a designated driver who will only drink non-alcoholic beverages and use a rota system to make sure everyone takes their turn - that way everyone can enjoy a drink now and again.

And remember, drink sensibly. Your organs are always under attack whether you have one drink a day or binge once a month. You may be genetically predisposed to problems with your liver or develop a serious condition.

I really don't understand the problem, if you've had a drink, then you don't drive, if you drive, then you don't have a drink, SIMPLE. The 'Legal Limit' thing is a load of cobblers, there should be a tolerance limit, for anyone on medication for colds etc. (I think that some cold remedies have a certain amount of alcohol, or is this just an excuse that some drink drivers have used?) but other than that, the legal alcohol limit should be ZERO, as a professional driver, I don't see why selfish idiots should be given leeway on this matter.

Police are able to use their own descretion when handing out 24 hour restrictions. That is due to the fact that alcohol affects some people more than others. Its a public safety thing, to get people that shouldn't be driving (but still under the legal limit), off the road. Note that you don't get a criminal record for a 24 hour suspension.

If you are caught over .080, then you are charged with DUI, which is a criminal offence, and you also face a suspension, that is longer than 24 hours.

THe idea behind all of this is to make our roads safer.
