It the mid 60s it was determined that an explosion of coal from the sides of the ship triggered the explosion of amo being stored nearby.
It was said that the U.S.S. Maine was shot down by a Spanish fleet, which is just a result from "yellow journalism" to rally up the public to support the Spanish-American War.
The explosion was a mistake.

USS MAINE was an old style warship sitting in Havana Harbor. It's engines ran on coal and where you have coal, you have coal dust. And like grain dust in farm silos, it can ignite and cause a massive explosion. The USS Maine had such an explosion. Due to the USA wanting to have an empire (Manifest Destiny) people such as William Randolph Hearst claimed it was blown up with a mine, getting the USA into the Spanish American War, where the USA ended up with the Philippines, Cuba, Puerto Rico and a bunch of other little colonies. (We also stole Hawaii from the Hawaiians.)

Most of the capital ships of the US fleet at that time had problems with coal dust explosions, and some had had several. The Maine had the wonderful design feature of a coal bin next to a major ammunition bunker, and it's a good bet that's where the disaster lay. A big kaboom, but the US was really just looking for an excuse to go to war at the time, and that sufficed, especially with (imagine this!) the major media of the time pushing their political outlook more than the truth.

USS Maine (SSBN-741) is on active service today
The second USS Maine (BB-10), launched in 1901, was the lead ship of her class of battleships. She participated in the voyage of the Great White Fleet, and was decommissioned in 1920 to be sold for scrap in 1923.
The first USS Maine (ACR-1), was a second-class pre-dreadnought battleship (launched in 1889, sometimes referred to as an armored cruiser) whose sinking by an explosion, on February 15th 1898, precipitated the Spanish-American War.
