The way you have asked this question makes me think that someone just told you off for somking and drinking and let me guess - this just didn't help your stress levels go down. Does smoking and drinking help you to reduce and overcome stress?
If you are feeling stressed, you may feel need for the support of the people around you. Unfortunatelly, not all of us live with someone or have friends with enough time and good will on their hands. Even those who genuinelly want to help us may not be able to understand how we feel and why. And that may make us feel that the only thing we can reffer to is smoking or drinking. Or both. Well, the good news is, many people try to cope with stress in a much worse manner, as for example taking drugs or taking it out on others, and in comparisson, your strategy doesn't seem so extreeme. I believe there is no need for me to tell you how alcohol may be a good "mood lifter", but for a very short while. And the cigarettes/tobaco... the "calming" effect that you may experience while you are smoking a cigarette lasts only as long as the cigarette and than you feel you need another one. While you are doing this, you are not dealing with your stress, you are just postponing the moment when you gonna start. So, why not now.
I am not tellng you never to smoke or drink again, but I would suggest that you try to analize few things. First - what made you stressed and can you change it? Maybe you will need to change in some way so that stressful situation doesn't have the same effect on you? Second - what kind of stress are you experiencing? Stress is a very wide term and often used when we are not really stresse, but just temporarilly agitated. These days there is so much information out there about stress - you can contact your GP, there are help lines, literature and tones of info on Internet. Have you been diagnosed with stress? If not, look into the symptoms characteristic for stress. You will also see, especially if someone is experiencing high levels of stress for a prolonged time, this can be very damaging to your whole body, it can affect your memory, concentration... Smoking and drinking, sorry to say, will just act as adding more wood to a fire.
Try simple things, maybe something new, write about how you feel (you will learn a lot), play with art and craft materials, see a funny moovie, if you can't bring yourself to exercise, at least take a walk just to "change the air" and you will see, you will feel different.
You may not like this, but, with all the help in the world, it is only you who can make you feel better, and this is only if you who can use your strenght in a right way and kick the stress out of your life.

Your friendly hypocrite, responding here. When you drink and smoke when you're stressed, to tend to overdo both in excess. Sadly, then when you do fall asleep or pass out, you wake up to additional levels of anxiety, brought on by withdrawal. And what's the obvious solution? Have a drink! And a smoke! It is a vicious cycle - one I'm battling right now - but try to stay strong. One day of clear thinking helps make mountains back into molehills. And by all means, find a way to get out of your own head for at least an hour or so - we tend to chatter to ourselves to the point where we start going crazy!

well, if you want to be cool, then you should pretty much smoke and drink 24/7. stress matters not to the Marlboro man. better yet, sell alcohol and tobacco to school-age kids.
