I re-carpeted a 3000 sq ft house 2 years ago and in Florida they now charge by the square foot.
So a fairly low end carpet (we are selling the house and assume new owners will change the flooring to suit them) was $5.80 a square foot and there are 9 square feet to a yard. This was padded and installed.
So that makes it $52.20 a square yard, padded and installed.
I hope this helps you out a bit.

Expensive is a relative term for everyone. For one person $1,000 to cover a family room is expensive to another $10,000 is quite reasonable. I do not consider $24/sq. yd. to be expensive as I have seen carpet sold for upwards of $150/ sq. yd. New Zealand wool is so nice.
Consider the area of the house you are putting your carpeting. Is it high traffic? How long do you want your carpet to perform prior to replacement? 5, 10, 15, or 20 years. What stain treatment type will suit your lifestyle? Fiber system? This will help you to determine what quality of carpeting to use. Are you selling your house soon? What grade of carpeting will your buyers expect?
Dalton Georgia is the carpet capital of the world. 95% of all carpet you buy in the US will be produced there and shipped to your flooring store.
Nylon, Polyester, and Olefin are petroleum based fibers.
You will receive the technology and materials that you pay for.
Check 3 seperate flooring stores. Have fun, you will learn a lot and have a completely different experience at all three. Set aside some time. 1 hour per store. No more or flooring burnout and frustration will occur. Pick one (You'll know which one) and work with your salesperson to accurately and quickly select the carpet and color that is right for your needs.
To give you my cost perspective on the industry.
In January of 2000, mid to low grade nylon carpet was $18.00/ sq. yard. or $2.00/sq. ft.
Also in January 2000, legislature was passed that all flooring surfaces must be priced universally so consumers could equally compare all flooring surfaces.
$24/sq. yd. = $2.66/ sq. ft.
Today January of 2007, the exact same mid to low grade nylon carpeting cost $2.99/square foot or $26.91/square yard.
That's over a 10% increase annually every year since 2000.
$24.00/sq yd could be mid quality carpet on sale; if you look carefully and the store has a good buyer. Selections will be a bit limited in that range. Remnants are a great buy for smaller bedrooms. Stock carpet will be your best values. Special orders are a premium service. For larger quanities such as 1000 square feet or more ask for a roll price quote.
Good luck with your project

right in the middle. i sell it by square foot and that comes to about 2.50 a ft2. most instock stuff at menards home depot, that would be higher end stuff for the instock. special order carpet can get to 6 or 7 dollars a ft2.

I assume you mean installed.
It's a little high. Anywhere from $10-$20 is the normal range I've seen.
