When you briol food, you want the burner to stay ON. You're counting on all that radiant heat coming from above the food, to sear the meat (for example).
You don't always have to leave the oven door open, but there are two reasons to do this:
1) The oven may reach the temperature associated with "broil" and turn off the element.
2) You may not what the entire piece of meat, or whatever food you're cooking, to heat up. A baked alaska might be in this category. You want to get the top hot, without getting the insides hot, so you really want to keep the oven cooler than if you shut the door.

The oven door is left open so only the TOP of the item is cooking. (If the door is closed the internal temperature of the oven rises and overcooking could result). An example is when cooking pizza, After the pizza is done, you can broil the cheese to make sure it is melted (not affecting the rest of the pizza). The oven door open, prevents the rest of the food from cooking, just the "top" portion is affected. It all depends on what you are broiling as to whether you want the door open or closed. Keep in mind that when you're using the "broil" function in an oven, you're only operating the heating units at the top of the oven iteslf, so your food will be cooked from one side (think of it as something like an upside-down barbecue grill). By opening the oven door, you're allowing for the temperature to correct itself without having to juggle the settings. While you don't *have* to open the oven door, it's just handy to do so when you don't want to run the risk of over-cooking your food.

It is not necessary. The idea is that in broiling, the cooking is done by the infrared radiation rather than the high temperature, so leaving the door open could cook the interior of the food without overcooking the surface.

It doesn't!!! Most people who leave the door open do this because they don't have a broiler pan which can take the full heat of the broiler.... leaving the door open allows some of the heat to escape... others leave the door open just because they've seen someone else do it.... The key is having a "broiler pan"

Firefly hit it on the head. When you are grilling meat under the broiler you want to sear the outside of the meat and if the burner goes off you wont be able to do that before the indide of the meat is baked to doneness. This will cause your meat to lose its juicyness.

the oven door does not have to be open you may keep a close eye on your food with the light thru your glass if you have one , if not i suggest you check frequently

It's not supposed to be open. Maybe certain recipes call for it, such as garlic bread that burns easily, but otherwise it's normally kept shut.
