Words of mouth was the medium used at large in that time. So, the writers would write what he frequently hear from the story tellers. Two or more witnesses telling the same story can be enough reason to have it written. Luckily for the four apostles, most of what they wrote was what were all commonly heard. There are contradictions however in some events but it is just to make us more confident that many were from hearsays. Some parts of the written texts were purposely unsigned for fear of being persecuted by the Roman Empire or whoever is the reigning kingdom in the area specially if it will have any negative effect on the government. As for the names of the writers, it is obvious that you never read the Bible completely. There is always a prologue that says who the writer was, what was his name, where did he live and how did he write the text.

No. Peyote is from the American Southwest so they wouldn't have had access to it. Besides, if you prophesied and it turned out to not be true in the Old Testament, you'd be killed.
I recently heard that the Oracle of Delphi was sniffing some kind of fumes coming up from the depths of the earth though.
