Oh, there's lots of difference.

An atheist doesn't believe that he has a personal friendship with a magic invisible guy who created the universe.

An atheist doesn't think that being certain of his beliefs is a sure sign that those beliefs are correct - he acknowledges that he may be wrong, and is strong enough of character to know that's not a flaw.

An atheist doesn't believe that he speaks for "god".

An atheist doesn't confuse fleeting thoughts in his head with "messages from god".

An atheist doesn't believe that he can know more about a subject than people who actually put effort into studying that subject, simply by following his uninformed intuitions.

An atheist doesn't believe that if the universe is wonderful, it must be because someone like him designed and created it.

Atheists really are nothing like those swellheaded egocentric folks. Good point!

Swellheaded egocentrics exist in all flavors. You can find them in christianity, islam, or whatever religion claims to have 'the only way, truth and life'.
The word "Atheist" describes a person who doesn't believe in a religious god. Thus far, it is a sign of intelligence.
When an 'atheist' disclaims the possible existence of any infinite intelligence, any meta-mind existence, then he joins the ranks of the other egocentric religious maniacs. His 'god' is simply called 'nothing' - but it is still an icon substituted for aliveness and awareness.
