If it's a purebred American Pitbull Terrier, then it should have papers. If not ,the other person is lying to you. If you have a picture you can post a link and I'll tell you if I think it looks like a pitbull or not.

Hello,
If your american pit bull terrier doesnt have papers of any kind it would be hard to prove its linage. But however just because the dog doesnt have papers doesnt mean it isnt purebred.
Although in some places some people will say its a pit bull when it really isnt. Pit bulls looks very on there qaulity. If you have a way of sending a picture i can tell you if indeed he is a pit bull or a mix.

you mean... "I purchased a pit bull and it doesn't look like a pit bull. The person I bought the dog from said it was full blooded. How can I find out if this dog, is in fact, full blooded?
Basically, there is no way to prove whether or not the dog you purchased is a pure bred without "papers". That is why people who show dogs only use dogs with proven blood lines.

It is very difficult to find a pure bred APBT and if the person you bought the dog from told you it was a "pit" then the dog more than likely is not pure. "Pit" is a deragatory term for the bull and terrier breeds that are labeled as "pit bulls" even though they are several distinct breeds. Pure bred American Pit Bull Terriers are not accepted by the AKC by that name, instead they are registered as American staffordshire terriers. If the parents of the dog were not registered then the dog is most likely not pure.

There is no such thing as a "pure bred" pit bull. Pit bulls are merely concentrated mutts. They are a mixture of numerous different "Bull & Terrier" breeds. The most common breed mistaken for a pit bull is the stafforshire bull terrier.
This is not to say that pit bulls are not wonderful dogs, they are. But it is impossible for there to be a breed standard because the bloodlines differ so much.
If you are going to buy a pit bull you need to know what you are looking for and actually meet the dog first.

There is nothing wrong with a pit. They can be the most wonderful loving animals in spite of the rotten reputation that they are laboring under these days. Make sure that you take some obedience classes with a qualified teacher, so that YOU learn the proper way to handle this animal. Good Luck!

Without the parents being registered, there is no proof of lineage.
