I always thought that Goliath had four brothers and that is why David picked up 5 stones. I found out that he had at least one brother in 2 Sam 21:19 (NLT) "During another battle at Gob, Elhanan son of Jair from Bethlehem killed the brother of Goliath of Gath." But, I am more inclined to think he chose 5 stones, in case he would have missed his target.

Because it is just good sense. He was facing a man armed with a javelin and sword, which can be used multiple times, as well as a shield. David ONLY took his sling and necessary ammo. Goliath was very capable of both ducking or using his shield to ward off the first few shots at his head, so bringing extra ammo is only sensible.
BTW, the sling was the Bronze-age equivalent of a handgun, not a child's toy. I would want to be able to shoot Goliath more than once also (assuming I had to do so)!

He used his brain. He probably felt he could get the giant on his first throw, but God had not necessarily told him that. He brought extra stones just in case. Common sense! (Although I don't know if he would have had the time to toss all five! He would have had to do some running!)

Good Q. He should have just brought along a muslim with a bomb strapped to him and offered it to goliath as a gift.
