I heard they are now selling stuff in-flight but how about before you go on-board?

Take everyone's advice and buy food from a restruant or store before you board the plane. Some airports have some really good take out places. There's one place in the Austin airport that has the best burger I've ever eaten! Phonenix offers a California Pizza Kitchen that has a great chicken ceaser sandwhich.

Buy on board, or BOB, food isn't that great and usually consists of a sandwhich or snack box for about $5. If you're on a full flight and are seated towards the back of the plane you run the risk of them selling out of your choice before they get to you. I've been on several flights where this has happened.

ETA: Even when I fly first class I buy food to eat before I board my flight. I fly America West often (my friend is a flight attendant for them so I fly for free) and I know what their food choices are in first class-grilled samon (which I'm allergic to) or chicken pasta salad w/ way too much parsley.

The food they sell is usually on board and it isn't any better than the food everyone complained about before.
Do yourself a favor and stop at the food court in the airport and pick up a sandwich. The money is well spent.

generally i like to bring my own food since that ensures that i get to eat what i like for cheaper. airlines do not offer food for purchase before boarding the plane though. there are plenty of venues in the airport that sell food though. once you enter the airport and go through security, you can wander around those restaurants and stores for magazines and coffee or whatever before you go to your gate for boarding.

Airline food is only sold on the aircraft. It is not sold at the gates. There should be plenty of food options in the airport concourse itself.

Most airports have a food court where you can purchase anything from grinders to salads and wraps etc. to bring on-board with you.

After you cross security any food you buy can be taken on the plain. So maybe try and find a deli or something and grab your self a meal for later.
