Baking soda is bicarbonate of soda.
Baking powder is a combination of baking soda plus a few other things, most importantly a dry acid.
Baking soda and/or baking powder are added to batters for leavening; i.e., in order to produce the gas that make cakes, muffins, and quick breads rise.

i used to get this one mixed up too but i know now for sure

Sodium bicarbonate is the chemical compound with the formula NaHCO3. Because it has long been known and is widely used, the salt has many other names including sodium hydrogen carbonate, sodium bicarb, baking soda, bread soda, cooking soda, bicarb soda, saleratus or bicarbonate of soda. It is soluble in water.
Some forms of baking powder contain sodium bicarbonate combined with cream of tartar.

It is NOT the same as baking powder, and they do not function the same way in recipes AT ALL. Baking soda is "bicarbonate of soda." If you mix them up in a recipe, you may end up with a VERY SALTY aftertaste (speaking from experience)...

No, I'm not sure what the bicarbonate of soda is, I think it's liquid. Baking Powder is totally different and many recipes call for both. But they are very inexpensive so it's not a big deal.

Baking Powder versus Baking Soda
Both are used to make baked goods rise.
You can substitute baking powder in place of baking soda, but you cannot use baking soda when a recipe calls for baking powder.
Substitutions:
1 tsp baking powder = 1/2 tsp cream of tartar + 1/4 tsp baking soda
1 tsp double-acting baking powder = 1/4 tsp baking soda + 1/2 cup buttermilk, sour milk or yogurt (to replace 1/2 cup liquid in recipe)
1 tsp double-acting baking powder = 1/4 tsp baking soda + 1/4 cup molasses (reduce liquid in recipe by 1/4 cup; adjust sweeteners)
1 tsp double-acting baking powder = 2 tsp quick-acting baking powder
1 tsp single-acting baking powder = 3/4 tsp double-acting baking powder

it isnt the same as baking powder cause u need baking powder to make cookies and stuff and if u put vinegar in baking soda it will have a chemical reaction but baking powder wont. Also baking soda is used to kill bacteria but baking powder isnt.
