Neuroscientists and Psycho-biologists are arguing now that there may be the "God-lobe" in the brain!
Fascinating research is being done to the temporal lobes, I can't remember specifically which part, but it seems that electric stimulation to this area causes grandiose religions experience (like seeing the Virgin Mary, or seeing a "bright white light").
It also seems that such experiences that are induced in the lab occur with respect to the subject's religious upbringing. (i.e. If you were raised Catholic, you see the Virgin, if you are Jewish, you may all of a sudden hear a Cantor, etc).
The implications of this research, however, is highly controversial. 98% of the world believes in some kind of higher power (not necessarily God). If this part of the brain is isolated and proven to exist, then one must ask what evolutionary purpose does it serve to exist in so many people? And if it does exist in so many people, then Atheism, by default, would be classified as abnormal (understand this isn't my oppinion, only the implication as an abnormality is anything that the general population does not have or experience).

That's sort of a good question; however, the belief in "God" isn't really as widespread as it seems, since the definition of God varies so widely.

Two possible reasons - hope and the great unknown.
In a difficult situation, what do we do? Hope and look to the great unknown.
These are intangibles that move us forward, so they have great power. God is a great intangible power that comes from humans.
Best I can do.

humans have looked up to a higher being since the beginning....in every single culture....expressed through art and song...you would have to assume a profound reason....it is far to much for us all to ever understand....in this lifetime anyways....
