Just as there are many words in the English language that mean "beautiful," there are many words in ASL that mean the same thing as well. Try these sites:
http://www.masterstech-home.com/ASLDict.html
http://www.handspeak.com/
http://www.lifeprint.com/asl101/pages-layout/signs.htm
Remember: in ASL, you can't really look up a word. You have to look up it's context. So, you couldn't look up the word "run" on its own. You'd find a sign meaning "to walk rapidly" "to apply for an elected office" "to tear stockings..." So, keep that in mind too!

The best way to learn ASL is having a deaf person teach you the proper way to sign... If not then try to hang out in places the deaf community gets together. I agree completely with what Ally said and not only is it necessary to know ASL words but you also need to learn how to properly use gestures and classifiers when communicating with the deaf community (the more you hang with them or are in contact with them the more you learn on how to appropriately use certain signs and gestures.) The link below is very helpful. Just keep in mind that there may be some slight changes in some signs, depending in what region of the US some signs are slightly different.... Just like any language- for example, i speak fluent Spanish and at times when speaking with individuals from Spain, Puerto Rico or South America i need some clarification because they may use an expression or word I'm not too familiar with... same with ASL

deaf people are amazingly patient and if you try and learn the basics they can figure it out and the best way if you get stuck is spell it out. Or carry a notepad and write it.
After you learn the basics and start doing it. Learning the short cuts and such it will come naturally and be as easy as speaking english. The computer for deaf people has been a god sent it puts you on an even playing field with hearing people.
You never have to feel bad because you can't hear or sound funny. Just remember if someone is truly deaf, shouting doesn't help. E mails are wonderful ways to communicate.

Pick up a DVD at your local library on this. Plus there are lot's of great books! I felt it was easy to learn but my ex boyfriend was deaf...so I'm sure that helped. Older hearing impaired people do have slight variations on sign language...but most people understand.

This site has a person show you how to do it, instead of just pictures of what your hands would look like.
