It is the ability to layout text, headlines and pictures so it looks like it was setup by a professional typesetter. Once the only way to get the look was to prepare rough copy and have a tradesperson set the type and lay it out in physical form. Then for a while, camera ready copy was printed paper is neat columns that were literally cut out and pasted down for the pressman to make a picture on an offset plate. Today most publishing is done with desktop publishing programs of greater or lessor strength.
One of the differences between word processing and desktop publishing is that if you layout a front page and it has 3 stories on it that are continued on page 2, 5, and 7 and you go in and add something or delete something from each page, in desktop publishing the words will flow to or from the correct page. In word processing, if you try to do that, you will manually have to move the words.
