i have jet black hair, and i want to dye my hair a lighter brown. my friends said i should bleach my hair before applying on the color so it can go through.. but i dont want to. will i get the same results if i got blonde highlights instead?

NOOOO dont bleach your hair, i had dark brown hair i bleached mine and it went a orangy yellow colour, and it cost me 230 pounds to have it re-done and still now most of my hair is dead, if i was you i would go and ask a hairdressers advice, but whatever you do dont bleach it!!

Ask a professional hair stylist even if you don't use them to do the work. Bleaching isn't too bad as long as you don't do it very often. It can really damage your hair. Have a plan in place for your roots as they grow out.

no, because you are not taking the black out, you are just putting blonde on top of it and it won't show up blonde. sorry, your going to have to bleach...
