I have two cats and my sister cleans the one litter box every couple of days. Honestly- I can tell you from personal experience that one litter box is better than fine. You had a good idea with the less space taken up, less mess to clean up. Stepping on cat litter sucks XD And it means less rooms smell like kitty litter.

Get a third litter box. One litter box per cat even though they interchange. MOst cat authorities recomend that the number of litter boxes should be: (number of cats) + 1. So if you have 2 cats, you should have 3 boxes. But I found that 1 litter box per cat is usually enough as long as you keep all of them clean.

You should have 1 more litter box than you have cats, or at least one for each cat. As for "making" them use them evenly, not too likely. If the most used one is more accessible that will draw them to it. Cats are lazy, they will use the closest one to them. put them side by side, but if you are going to do this, i would recommend 2 covered boxes. Cats like some privacy.

You want them to use the boxes more evenly? Good luck with that. Making a cat bend to your will is nearly impossible. No matter what you do, each cat will use whichever box it feels like using at the time. Moreover, any attempts by you to make them change their toilet habits may result in litter box avoidance issues. So just let them go where they choose.

It is likely that the small box was first and the other two cats are used to that. You probably won't be able to change their preferences. You could try switching the locations of the two boxes but this could be stressful for the cats.

I agree with the person who said get another box. Cats are weird about their potty habits. My cats like red litter boxes better than any other colour. Go figure. So I just got more red boxes. (I have 8 indoor cats.)

get three, cat's don't like to pee where other cats have. It's a way of marking their territory.
