I ask this because I think it ridiculous as a notion for a 'God' to create us for the sole purpose of dedicating our lives in worship to 'him' (sic).
That would have to make 'God' not a supreme being but a supreme egotist of the highest order. Do you agree?

Having read some 'interesting' answers, may I add this:
It does not make arrogant to ask this question at all. If you look, the point I am making is that any being so powerful as to create the universe, would surely not need the comforter of peoples adoration.
When I feed my cats, do I do so to make them obey me and bow down to me, or do I do it because I love and care for them (they are 2 months old and to be fair anyone would!).
And 'stayathomemum' - I suggest YOU research more fully, there has not been one billion Christians at any time in the last 2,000 years and at one time, most people believed the world was flat, at the centre of the universe and that lightening was caused be angry Gods.
Times change and with more knowledge, there is less need for conjecture and answers to questions that appear scary to some.

And to answer 'wefmeister' I worship (if that is the word) the ones I love; being my friends and family.

GREAT question!!!!! You are perhaps the first person I've seen here who's addressed the issue that the idea of a "god" is merely a reflection of the conflict between human insecurity, fear and heightened ego-awareness!
So...what does THAT tell you about how likely the existence of a "supreme being" is? WE are the supreme beings (economically) on this planet, and not for a long time. It will probably result in our extinction, too.

God saw that without higher instruction, we'd fook it all up. So, since god created us, god took on the responsibility of trying to bollocks up his little project. He's having a crack at doing it the best way he knows how. He invested a lot of time and energy setting the whole thing up. Don't you think he'd rather leave us all to it and go and have a pint with Mrs God?

--You either must have been dropped on your head when you were an infant or you are just vindictivley bizaar in nature?
--What you don't have enough enjoyment of life from the workings & fantastic gifts of our egoistic god?
----You sound like you are either totally poor, with every disease, tragedy, loss of all your loved ones, no friends, no home , no food to eat---to feel so ugly about God--is that your excuse or reason or what?
--You are forced to pray all day?
--Not allowed to make up you own evolutionary gods?
--When did God stop your breathing to let you know your not getting away with your contempt?
--Do you have any children? Did you have your part in giving them birth because of your egotism?
--Do you do anything free from egotism?
--How often do you let your narcisstic side come to the fore, to assure yourself that you are your own god?
--Has your water supply been poisoned by God for all the mocking you do?
--If He were so egotistic, would it not be easy for him to turn off your air supply personally for your mockery?(just 4 little minutes, and you would be gone) I would do it if I were God and was so full of ego, as you claim he is?
--Would that not be a simple gesture for him or have you made up this egotisic god so ugly that you somehow have eliminated from existence?
--Why bother yourself so much? Is it as defense mechanism that you have to go on the offense to convince yourself he does not deserve to exist,--- what is your amazing story, it REALLY needs to be published?
----My my, all that conjured up knowledge of egotism, you must have really had to have searched the depth of your being--to indeed be so eloquent in defining what Jehovah the God of the universe is all about.
---You must have been around during Adams creation, some 6000 yrs. ago to know how God programmed Adam to bow down every minute or so.
--- With all your knowledge of ego, start a religion for your self and see what you have been missing and by all means study the Bible to find the enormous info on God's practice of all the obscene egotism that you claim he is made up of.
--Are you happy now, since you have vented your filth? Did you get your high today? Whats your next perversion?

What sort of ego does God have to allow you to sin, lead a selfish life, yet he gave his only Son - the flesh/word of the Trinity - Jesus Christ as a sacrifice so you can have life everlasting just by receiving.
Ego? Not!
Ultimate definition of love and compassion? Yes!

Then I would imagine all inventors, writers, filmmakers and computer programmers have that same big ego. I guess a paycheck alone just isn't enough.

The god of the bible was created by bronze age men and resembles nothing more than a petty tyrant of the age. Think Saddam.

If God created us and gave us the ability to distinguish between what is precious and worthy and what is base and worthless, it would be completely illogical and unreasonable for Him to expect anything less than worship. God expects WORTH-ship, which is what the word means because He is WORTHY,
What do you worship ?
