Anyone out there have a child with Celiac Disease?

I know all about celiac disease, I have it. :(.... It SUCKS!....lol
I started feeding my baby solids and my doctor gave me the go ahead to include gluten.
We are introducing the foods one at a time for 4 days.
A couple days into the oatmeal she did develop what looks like a rash around her mouth (moustache rash) also looks like chapped lips..
There are no other signs (diahorrea, diaper rash, gas)....

How did you discover your childs celiac disease?
(in my day they didnt really know what it was and i was very malnourished by the time they found out,.. they had to go into my intestine with a camera.)

What happens when your child as an allergy?



I will ask my doctor but it is saturday so im asking on here first. :)

indreamland, your child sounds like my own discovery except at a much younger age,... you and my mother probably have alot to talk about!!!!
I was 4 years old when they discovered Celiacs and was hospitalized for a couple weeks. Upon being transferred to the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children (amazing hospital) they discovered what was wrong.
Among most of the same symptoms you describe, I was sleeping all day, only waking with enough energy to eat and very very skinny!

I am confused about the rash, she does have a pacifier and drool alot but she has been teething and drooling for a month now,..
I didnt think it was a Celiac symptom but I thought maybe when they are really young with celiacs they could show a rash....

Good luck. No one in my family has been diagonsed with Celiac's, except my daughter. She is now 5 and was given a tenative diagnosis (positive blood work) at 4.

Here is why we had the blood tests done on her. At three months, she was classified as failure to thrive, unknown reason. At ten months, she had only gained 5 lbs from birth. The Dr. recommended swiching to formula. Her one year check up she weighed 13 lbs for a total weight gain of 5.5 lbs. She was in the doctors monthly after that for yeast diaper rashes. (no I did not let her sit in her diapers, I wiped the area with a mix of baby soap and water (wipes were too harsh), and applied zinc oxide). She finally reached 20 pounds at 26 months. At 3 she complained of tummy aches (lots of gas) and frequently had diareah. Her behavior was difficult to say the least, frequent tantrums. At 3.5 she was evaluated for autism, because the doctor was concerned with the way she interacted with people in the office and the answers I gave on an evaluation she gave us. Autism was ruled out because she was way above the curve verbally and with her motor skills. At her 4 year appointment the doctor recommended more blood work, as she weighted all of 26 lbs. The doctor asked if I minded she if she was screened for Celiacs on a hunch, since blood was being drawn, I agreed. It came back positive. In the end, she has gained 10 lbs in one year on a gluetin free diet. Her behavior is drastically improved.

When my daughter has an allergy she has pain, she becomes very clingy to me, throw very severe tempertantrums, and diarreah. No rash, nothing that you can easily see.

So there is the story. Lots of little things and no answers.

Age does matter is a small way. An infant may have Celiac's and test negative because of an undeveloped immune system. As they get older the IgG-antiglaidulin (sorry about the spelling) will increase. So when young false negatives can happen, but rarely false positives.

My baby's Dad has Celiac disease, so I held off on introducing her to gluten as well. Around 8 month I started, and haven't seen any reaction yet.
It is my understanding that in order for them to test your child using the blood test, your child has to be eating gluten on a regular basis. I'm not sure if age matters when they do the test.

Does your baby use a pacifier? My daughter developed a rash around her mouth. My sister said it was from her pacifier (and teething).

I too am gluten free. There is a new test that replaces the intestional biopsy:Tissue Transglutaminase IGA, and Tissue Transglutaminase IGG. There are several support groups called "ROCK" (raising our celiac kids) try to google that.
My doctor's wife and kids have celiac and he just recomends the annual blood test. And yes I bite my nails every year waiting for the results!
