Depends on the area, your daughter's age, and family income.
I wouldn't spend more than $7,500 (I'm in NYC).
Think of it as just a 'starter' car. Your daughter may want something with a DVD player, tinted windows, retractable roof, four wheel drive, etc, but the reality is that your first car just doesn't have that long of a life expectancy.
One suggestion if your daughter wants something more expensive: Offer to match (or triple) her contribution.
So if she works and raises 1,500 on her own, you'll contribute another 1,500 (or 3,000, or more) to help fund the car.
Ditto for car insurance.

My first car cost $975. I plan on buying my daughter an older Volvo. I would like to spend under $4000 and put her in something extremely safe. The above comments are true; the life expectancy of a teen's first car is very short. IMO, a safe, inexpensive car is best. Save the big bucks and buy her something nice after college.

Honestly it really depends on a family's income or how much your child is spoiled. My parents make a decent living, and I'm also pretty spoiled. But they didn't want me to have the BEST car, ya know? I started off on my 16th bday (which was in 2003) with a 92 Honda Accord with 50,000 miles on it for 5,000. They bought the car for me & paid for my tax & tags, etc...BUT I paid back 3,000 of it...I also know kids who started out with no car from their parents...or a 250-500 dollar car...or a brand new BMW. So it really all depends on what you want to do...:)

On my childrens sixteenth birthday, I gave them $1,000 to aquire a vehicle, one chose a car for $550.00 and bought insurance, tags, and still had money left to go out riding around till her pay day arrived. Another child opted for a $1,000 down payment, and had to let car sit untill she saved enough for tags and insurance( she was real mad that I would not let her drive with no insurance), my son bought a 'project car' for $250.00, and an old beater for $400.00 and still had enough for insurance, and tags(although he was broke by then, and I loaned him $25.00 for his first weekend cruise)The project car(a father/son thing) brought us closer together than I ever believed possible, and now, years later, (he is a corporal in the U.S.Army (in Germany) , we frequently reminisce about the fun we had building,it and the first time we drove it. The car is now long gone, but the memories, we will always have.

depends of course on how much you can afford...try not to spoil her and pay for the whole thing yourself, like meantioned above you could say to her 'if you save whatever you can, ill double (maybe triple) that amount.
try and get something something thats:
>>reliable
>>safe (i.e with AT LEAST 1 airbag)
>>affordable in the long run (servicing costs, fuel)
wish my parents were mroe like u, there given me nuthen for my 1st car

I bought my first car with my own money I don't like it when parents spoil their kids. buy your daughter an old SLOW car because being her first car she will speed with it and maybe even crash it.
