I was 21 when I filed my 2005 taxes last year. I check the box that read "check here if someone else can claim you as a dependent". But my parents did not claim me as a dependent and I know I am entitled to personal allowances that increase my tax refund that I did not take advantage of. I know I am supposed to fill out for 1040x to amend my last year's tax but do not how to fill it out exactly to correct my mistake. I want to amend my 2005 tax to get money back for my mistake. Thank you all in advance

Column A is what you put on the original Return
Column C is what should have been reported
Column B is the difference in dollar amount of A and B
Mail the 1040X it will take 8 to 12 weeks to process.
Make sure to put on the back the reason that you are amending the return

you likely need not situation. in case you purely artwork area of a three hundred and sixty 5 days, you had taxes withheld less than the conception you would artwork the entire three hundred and sixty 5 days, so that you likely received't have any extra tax criminal accountability (in different words you had too a lot withheld). in case you get a clean pastime, you are able to flow unmarried and 0 to overwithhold if you're tense. I surely ought to ask, nonetheless, do you stay with dad? Med Ins on my own does not a depending make. i am going to offer you a touch get collectively. allow's say I make $three hundred a week, that factors as a lot as $15600 a three hundred and sixty 5 days. Tax on that is a touch less than $a million,000, so i'd have $20 a week withheld for taxes. If I underwithheld, it should be $10-$15 a week. yet, if I purely worked 26 weeks, my earnings is $7800 and my tax bill is $2 hundred. in spite of the underwithholding, I had $260-$390 withheld, and that i'm getting a reimbursement. _

If they COULD HAVE claimed you as a dependent (met all the rules) but didn't, then you are not entitled to an exemption for yourself - they'd be the only ones who could amend their return and claim it.

But if they were NOT entitled to an exemption for you, yes, you'd file a 1040X to amend your 2005 return and claim your exemption for yourself.

I would not attempt to file an 1040X without a computer program to guide you. If you used one to file the original return just go back and do the amendment in the same program. Otherwise go see a tax professional, they will charge you something like $80 to do it but it will be done correctly.
