To be more precise .... Americans will always say "London England", "Paris France", "Rome Italy", "Sydney Australia". You see it on here all the time. Don't Americans realise that everyone knows what place they're referring to when they say "Sydney"?

Its just something that bugs me, and I'd love to know the reason behind this habit you Americans have.

In america, there are 50 states and there are lots of cities having the same name in each state. Therefore it is a habit to call out the state the city is in to avoid confusion. For instance we may say Dalton, Wyoming or Washington, California etc. For large cities it can be confusing to such as if a person is from Washington you'd have to ask is that Washington DC or Washington state? Also, in america, a person may be from Warsaw, Ohio or London, Connecticut or Panama City, Florida. In the end however, it is more of a habit than anything.

If someone on here says they are from London, Paris, or Sydney, I'd have to ask for the state or country. Is it London, Ohio; Paris, Idaho; Sydney, Alabama?

Because America is founded upon immigrants. Therefore there are Londons', Paris', Rome etc etc all throughout the United States. Therefore, we are being polite as we are not assuming you understand where we are talking about. An American could just say London and be talking about somewhere entirely different from England. Its a habit we develop within America as well. If you tell someone you are from Houston, that doesnt necessarily mean youre from Texas, etc

You may be interested to learn that besides a Paris, France there also exists a Paris, Texas. Besides Las Vegas, Nevada, there is also a dreary little town by the name of Las Vegas, New Mexico. If you live in Texas and come into my travel agency, informing me that you want the cheapest possible trip to Paris, I will send you to Paris, Texas if you don't specify France, because that would, indeed, be the very CHEAPEST trip to Paris. In the interest of universal understanding, we Americans will specify our preferences to the best of our abilities. We are accustomed to having our failure to do so fed back to us through our least favorite orifice. If you know what I mean.
Sorry if our preference for being clearly understood annoys you. Best wishes to you, my dear, if you ever attempt to purchase a ticket to Las Vegas from Albuquerque without specifying Nevada. You're in for a real yawn of a vacation. Cheers!

We named a lot of our towns and cities after other places in the world (ex. Paris, Texas). Also, sometimes when we talk about cities and towns in different states in the U.S. we'll often refer to them using the city and the state (ex. Springfield, Missouri), because there are so many towns that have the same name in other states. So, we've grown accustomed to referring to places that way.

Because we have several cities in our coutry with those names, simply clarifying exactly where we're referring to ; we say Athens,Greece because we have an Athens in Georgia, Texas and Ohio. No disrespect intended.
